Soft, fluffy, and coated in a sweet, shiny glaze—these homemade donuts are perfect for a treat any time of day!

Ingredients:

For the Donuts:

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour (or 1:1 gluten-free flour)
  • ¼ cup sugar (coconut or cane sugar)
  • 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • ½ cup warm plant-based milk (almond, soy, or oat)
  • ¼ cup vegan butter (melted)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp nutmeg (optional, for classic donut flavor)

For the Glaze:

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp plant-based milk
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract

For Frying:

  • 2-3 cups neutral oil (such as vegetable or canola)

Instructions:

1️⃣ Activate the Yeast

  • In a small bowl, mix warm plant milk (not too hot!) and sugar, then sprinkle in yeast.
  • Let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.

2️⃣ Make the Dough

  • In a large bowl, whisk together flour, salt, and nutmeg.
  • Add the yeast mixture, melted vegan butter, and vanilla extract.
  • Mix until a dough forms, then knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.

3️⃣ Let It Rise

  • Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1-1.5 hours, until doubled in size.

4️⃣ Shape the Donuts

  • Roll out dough on a lightly floured surface to ½-inch thickness.
  • Cut out circles using a donut cutter or a cup (use a smaller cutter for the hole).

5️⃣ Second Rise

  • Place donuts on a parchment-lined tray, cover, and let rise again for 30 minutes.

6️⃣ Fry Until Golden

  • Heat oil in a deep pan to 350°F (175°C).
  • Fry donuts 1-2 minutes per side, until golden brown.
  • Remove and drain on a paper towel.

7️⃣ Make the Glaze & Dip

  • Mix powdered sugar, plant milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  • Dip warm donuts in the glaze and let set for a few minutes.

8️⃣ Serve & Enjoy!

  • Best eaten fresh, but they can be stored for 1-2 days in an airtight container.
