Soft, fluffy, and coated in a sweet, shiny glaze—these homemade donuts are perfect for a treat any time of day!
Ingredients:
For the Donuts:
- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour (or 1:1 gluten-free flour)
- ¼ cup sugar (coconut or cane sugar)
- 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
- ½ cup warm plant-based milk (almond, soy, or oat)
- ¼ cup vegan butter (melted)
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ tsp nutmeg (optional, for classic donut flavor)
For the Glaze:
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2 tbsp plant-based milk
- ½ tsp vanilla extract
For Frying:
- 2-3 cups neutral oil (such as vegetable or canola)
Instructions:
1️⃣ Activate the Yeast
- In a small bowl, mix warm plant milk (not too hot!) and sugar, then sprinkle in yeast.
- Let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
2️⃣ Make the Dough
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, salt, and nutmeg.
- Add the yeast mixture, melted vegan butter, and vanilla extract.
- Mix until a dough forms, then knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
3️⃣ Let It Rise
- Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1-1.5 hours, until doubled in size.
4️⃣ Shape the Donuts
- Roll out dough on a lightly floured surface to ½-inch thickness.
- Cut out circles using a donut cutter or a cup (use a smaller cutter for the hole).
5️⃣ Second Rise
- Place donuts on a parchment-lined tray, cover, and let rise again for 30 minutes.
6️⃣ Fry Until Golden
- Heat oil in a deep pan to 350°F (175°C).
- Fry donuts 1-2 minutes per side, until golden brown.
- Remove and drain on a paper towel.
7️⃣ Make the Glaze & Dip
- Mix powdered sugar, plant milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Dip warm donuts in the glaze and let set for a few minutes.
